Dear Editor,
Haile Selassie I Theocracy Reign Ivine Order of Nyahbinghi wishes to thank all those media houses that supported our efforts to bring to the attention of the Government of Guyana the plight of the Rastafarian community.
This community is blighted by an unjust marijuana law, that for almost three decades has sent thousands of young people to prison for possession of small amounts of marijuana while in countries around the world marijuana is legalized and small amounts decriminalized.
This law has destroyed young black families, bringing to our communities the negative social effects such as single parent families, hunger , teenage pregnancy, truancy, illiteracy, homelessness, child abuse, prostitution, criminal activities and hopelessness.
This is what brought out the large number of persons who braved the burning sun to march from Buxton to Square of the Revolution for “Liberation Through Marijuana Decriminalization”. The people have suffered for too long. It’s time to release the chains.
However, political statements threatening the Government made by RAS Leon Saul and Guyana Rastafari Council are not the views of the members of the House of Nyahbinghi who organized this march.
We support the Government in its efforts to develop this nation and are willing to sit at the table with representatives of Government to ensure changes to the ganja law as was promised by members of the present Cabinet while in opposition.
We do not want a political war; we need a Government that seeks to protect the rights of the Rastafarian community to be allowed to use the Holy herb for their sacrament and medicinal purpose.
We will never be happy to see our brothers and sisters being incarcerated for a spliff. We demand equal rights and Justice for our people Rastafarians and all those using marijuana.
The House of Nyahbinghi will Observe the UN designated “ WORLD GANJA DAY” on Friday 20th April 2018 with a walk from Parade Ground to the National Park where a Food Fair and Cultural Presentation will be held featuring local and foreign artistes.
RAS AARON BLACKMAN
Professional Social Worker /Poet,
Secretary House of Nyahbinghi.
