The Lions Club of Central Demerara recently held a gala dinner to celebrate 50 years of service to communities along East Bank Demerara.
Operating out of its den at Providence, this service organisation covers communities from Sussex Street in Georgetown to the lower Soesdyke-Linden highway.
While vision care and education support are among the club’s main service activities, Central Demerara Lions also assist with a wide range of community development activities in the villages along their service area. Over the years, thousands of residents have received free eye tests and spectacles.
In the field of education, the Lions, in association with Gafsons Toastmasters Club, recently completed the seventh speech craft course for secondary school students. Twenty-five students graduated from that course. This activity is in addition to the annual bursary awards to the top SSEE students from East Bank Demerara primary schools.
The club’s annual children Christmas parties, which for decades have been taking cheer to thousands of children, have now become standard events to which the communities look forward.
Central Demerara Lions are using the experiences of the past 50 years to guide their club through the next fifty.
