Dear Editor,
In a civilization steeped in immorality, shamelessness, sin and ignorance a child was born; a child who would go on to be the one to lead this nation of godless savages into men of high moral character. This child named Muhammad was born in 570 AD to a widow named Amina in the city of Mecca.
This child was no ordinary child for he was destined to be that guiding light for all of humanity who would take immoral men and turn them into godly saints within a matter of days.
Today, the name Muhammad (PBUH (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a household name as is the religion he founded; Islam. However, not many, including those who claim to be true followers of the religion of Islam and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), are truly acquainted with the events of his life and the messages which he preached.
This week, many in the Muslim World will celebrate Milaad-un-Nabi, the supposed birthday of the Holy Prophet of Islam. To have a national holiday and to hold various functions and dinner parties, in essence, sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate the life of a beloved one. However, as soon as the holiday is finished and the food is exhausted very few can say they have actually benefitted in a positive manner from this celebration.
How then can we truly celebrate the life and accomplishments of the Holy Prophet of Islam this Millad-un-Nabi? In my opinion, the most befitting manner of celebration is to educate oneself about the true teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and to dispel common misconceptions and misunderstandings regarding his life and teachings that have spread far and wide throughout the world today.
This is the manner of celebration which would not last one day but would last a lifetime and would work to bring about positive reform not just within yourself but also your homes, communities, and the world at large.
Today the name Muhammad and the religion Islam have unfortunately come to be associated with terrorism and extremism. However, even with a fundamental study of the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) one can come to understand that his teachings are far from violent.
At every step of his life, he exhibited and taught his companions to exhibit peace and patience. The Muslims underwent severe persecution for 13 years in Mecca at the hands of the disbelievers without once responding with violence or war.
After these long and painful years, the Muslims migrated to Medina only to be followed by the Meccans who came with the intention to kill. It was at this point that the Holy Prophet (PBUH), solely for the purpose of self-defence and to establish religious freedom not only for Muslims but for followers of all religions, permitted his followers to fight back.
We also see that at a personal level, all those who wronged the Holy Prophet (PBUH) were almost always forgiven and pardoned by him. There was Hinda, a female warrior who mutilated the dead body of the beloved uncle of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). She was forgiven by him upon repentance.
There was Habbar bin-al-Aswad who caused the miscarriage and consequential death of the daughter of The Holy Prophet (PBUH), Zainab. She was forgiven by him at the time of the conquest of Mecca. As such, there are countless examples from the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in which he has shown the moral qualities of peace and forgiveness at the highest level conceivable.
However, today the world, out of sheer lack of education and misguidance, associates the name Muhammad with violence and terrorism not knowing that he was a personification of the complete opposite; of love, peace, compassion, friendship, brotherhood and kindness.
As such what better way could there be to celebrate his life than by educating ourselves and the world at large of his beautiful and pure life and to inculcate these same moral qualities within us.
