Dear Editor,
After reading the news article “AFC must give up gov’t posts to save credibility, support – Ramkarran” (Sunday SN, 26th November 2017), I wondered if Ralph Ramkarran considered the ramifications of his ruminations.
Let us say, for argument sake, that the AFC did give up government posts would this not lead to worsening racial polarisation in Guyana?
When the AFC was formed, its founders said that they were not going to join with the PNC nor the PPP because they wanted to end racial voting. Yet, the AFC contested the General Elections of May 2015 in a coalition (APNU+AFC) led by the PNC. The AFC, with dwindling support, fortunes are now intrinsically tied to the fortunes of the PNC.
As one blogger noted on SN Blog/Forum that “…the strategy used by the PNC was one of rewarding AFC members with a disproportionate number of ministries and great personal privileges.
The AFC was expected to give up policy making to the PNC. When you trade your core principles for private privileges you cannot effectively address the major problems like the inconsistency of Cummingsburg Accord and constitution, complete rewrite of the constitution, and building an independent and meritocratic civil service….”
The AFC is no longer credible as a Third Political Party and is just an appendage of the PNC/R much like the WPA. Will the AFC give up political power to restore its credibility and support?
Yours Faithfully
Sean Ori
