Coach Crandon not satisfied with team’s performance

The Guyana Jaguars’ 35-year-old Head Coach Esuan Crandon is happy that his team registered a seven-wicket win against Windwards Volcanoes in three days here on Saturday in their third round CWI Digicel Regional four-day encounter but he is not satisfied with the overall performance of the team.
“Yes we won and extended our lead and that is a good thing. I’m happy with the win but I’m not satisfied with the team’s performance,” Crandon said with mixed emotions.
Asked his view on the 19-year-old pair of All-rounders Kemo Paul and Sherfane Rutherford Crandon informed that he thinks they are two very talented cricketers who have shown in the few games they have played that they have developed and are capable of winning games for the Jaguars.
“It’s early days now for them and I hope it’s just a taste of what’s to come in the near future,” Crandon added.
Over the last three seasons the Jaguars have lost just three times but dislodging the lower order quickly after blowing away the top order has been a constant and frustrating concern for the backroom staff and the Jaguars supporters.
“We have been preaching day in day out to the bowlers to be patient and consistent when bowling to the lower order. In this game in particular I thought the fast bowlers were inconsistent in the second innings because they tried to get a wicket with every ball and that resulted in them presenting alot of easy scoring opportunity to the opposition. Rutherford was very good in the first innings and I thought Permaul bowled beautifully in the second innings,” Crandon explained.
Openers Rajendra Chandrika and Tagenarine Chanderpaul seemed very uncomfortable to the short balls on a track which offered the pacers good pace and bounce and were both dismissed trying to hook without building a foundation for the middle order to build on.
“The top order didn’t perform in this match due to the lack of discipline and application. Obviously it was always going to be difficult with the hard new ball on such a surface but they had needed to fight and spend time at the crease,” lamented Crandon.
“I am very disappointed in their shot selection and was surprised that young Chanderpaul, who usually shows good temperament, played such a reckless shot in the first innings before looking much better in the second innings,” Crandon continued.
“Vishaul (Singh) and (Anthony) Bramble applied themselves and were able to bat long and put us in a very solid position. I would’ve loved to see Bramble score his first ton at this level, but he lost concentration and give it away,” Crandon concluded.
Singh scored his seventh First-Class century and Bramble made 90 with the two adding 173 runs between them.
The Jaguars left St Lucia yesterday for St Kitts where they face the Leewards Hurricanes from Thursday.
