The murder trial of Rohan Persaud called ‘Mongo’ 37, a spray painter and automobile bodywork repairman, of Lot 10 Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, is continuing before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court.
Persaud is accused of murdering Ganesh Permaul called ‘Bungal’, on September 17, 2015 at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
Permaul, a welder/fabricator, who was 29 at the time, lived at Lot 32 Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
In her opening address, State Prosecutor, Tuanna Hardy revealed the particulars of the charge to the jury. She mentioned that the men were acquaintances and had lived close to each other. On the day in question, Permaul was seen drinking with Persaud at his home during the morning. Permaul body was subsequently found dead with lacerations about his body on the bridge of the accused.
Detective Constable, Junior George testified to the role he played during the investigation. He had visited the scene where the body was found. There were two houses in the yard. The place was littered with broken bottles, cigarette packs, garbage and empty rum bottles.
Blood was observed in the vicinity. A pair of trunks with blood was retrieved from the scene and presented as evidence. The body, when found, had injuries to the head and back.
A total of 34 photographs that were taken at the scene were presented to the court.
Detective Corporal, Denzil Frank testified that during his investigation, he visited the scene and observed a motionless body on the ground. The pants and underwear were pulled down to the knees. There were various marks of violence on the body.
Frank said he contacted Persaud and put the allegation of murder to him. He said Persaud responded that he had left Permaul sleeping in the hammock and went to work. Persaud was arrested and placed in custody. Following intense investigations, he was subsequently charged with the capital offence.
Prosecutor Hardy subsequently made an application for the testimony of now deceased Haresh Doodnauth, to be admitted into evidence. Doodnauth’s wife, Latisha LaFleur, appeared in court and testified that he is dead.
State-appointed Attorney-at-Law, Sasha Roberts, who is appearing for the accused, cross examined both witnesses. The prosecution is expected to call eight witnesses.
The trial continues today.
