Why write about Leguan that you haven’t been to since 1986?

Dear Editor,
Your AFC Sunday Column by Imran Khan, Director of Public Information writing on Leguan would like to fool the country’s folks that the coalition (or should I say PNC) is pursuing development regardless of whether a particular area voted for or against it. His boasting about the government doing the roads on the island after 30 years does not make him an authority on the island’s development. He admits not being there for 30 years which means he was there in 1986.
I would like to remind him that the PNC paramountcy was in full flow countrywide at that time. Not surprisingly he was met by a “muddy tractor” because of the “bad condition of the roads.” Did he expect better at that time or is he afraid to say it for being consumed by the PNC in the coalition? Since he did not go there for 30 years, he has disqualified himself from knowing what was done during the intervening period.
For his information, let me state the following:
(1) I was born and bred on the island and being in my 52nd year, am qualified to speak on the island’s history, not him.
(2)The late Mr Winston Murray, a senior functionary of the PNC who was born there would visit on weekends. On the ferry (which was in a decrepit state in the 80’s) he would always promise the passengers, who had the courage to speak to him since the ministers were semi-gods that “next year” money would be budgeted for to provide electricity for the island. He then promised roads (which were always sand) then, potable water and clean koker. Of course year in, year out, these were his promises to islanders, none of which materialized. In fact, we had to dig two feet down to the main of the pipe to get drainings for cooking, bathing and other purposes. The island did not know what electricity looked like and the road did not know about bitumen.
(3) Forward to after 1992. The late great Dr. Jagan made it possible for the island to receive electricity. It was during the time of the PPP that bitumen was first used on the roads. It was during the PPP that potable water started reaching the first floor of houses from two feet below ground.
Mr Imran Khan would do well to talk to islanders about the island’s history rather than spread “misinformation” about a place he admits not visiting for 30 years but yet write as if he is an expert on the area. Is this the same man who was Information Liaison to the West Indies Cricket Board? Ever wonder that during the period of his sojourn, West Indies was in the doldrums and the laughing stock of the cricketing world. You need to get real Mr Khan and get your information right. In the mean time, we await his generalization of the “Ministry of Public Telecommunication, Public Health, Education, Sports and Culture along with the Stem Program and other youth initiatives reaching Leguan shortly.” Hope my letter will be published as to correct the “Misinformation.”
