Minister of Finance needs to know what “loura- kam” means

Dear Editor,
It is with great wonderment and untrammeled awe and a sense of patriotic pride that I find Minister Jordan’s comment on the Exxon “ deal “ troubling even to me a humble country bumpkin. The Minister is quoted in KN as saying -” it does not matter what kind of deal we get from Exxon, we should be happy to get any deal”
Editor, is the good Minister cognizant of the term “ deal” in the Guyanese parlance. There is another Creolese term which abridges the word deal, and that is “loura-kam,” which means take the “deal’ and be quiet. This statement is in light of another comment further on in the article where the Minister seeks to rationalize his position on any deal, by stating that the Guyana project will take Exxon deeper than any other preceding venture.
Does the Minister apprehend the fact that if and when new technologies, systems and processes are deployed Guyana will probably be required to finance the full cost of those developments. Was the Minister aware at the time that Exxon has backed away from a major investment in Indonesia that begun in the 1980’s?
One does wish that the Guyana Government publicizes the EXXON deal so that grey areas of the agreement are clarified and we the Guyanese owners can sleep soundly at night, assured that the Government’s business acumen and formidable negotiating apparatus is batting well for us, and not subjecting us to “ any deal is better than no deal at all” bearing in mind the Guyanese connotation of deal and “loura kam.”
