The declaration to officially grant Lethem township on October 20, 2017, will be part of the first ever Town Week.
Mayor of Lethem, Carlton Beckles, said plans are on stream for the hosting of the Lethem Town Week, with activities commencing on the October 15 and ending on October 21, 2017.
Mayor Beckles stated that the concept of the Town Week “is like the birth of a baby”. He explained that Lethem was born as a town on October 21, 2015 in the Parliament of Guyana.
Lethem, in Region Nine, is a key town, bordering with Brazil and is linked to that country via a concrete bridge across the Takutu River.
“What we will be doing is christening that baby. So what we will be having is the declaration where the plaque will be unveiled to officially declare Lethem as a town by his Excellency, President David Granger.”
Mayor Beckles said that work will commence soon on the Lethem Town Declaration Park, where the official declaration will occur.
Mayor Beckles noted that the Goals and Objectives of Lethem’s Town Week are to build unity and togetherness between the people of Region Nine and establish Lethem as a tourism destination as well as to showcase the Tourism and Agricultural potential of the Region.
“We see town week as a pride of the people of Lethem … of the people of the region and so forth. We want everybody to cherish it and while it is historic there won’t be another declaration, we will continue to have Lethem town week observed on a yearly basis”, Mayor Beckles said.
