Jocelyn Dow, and several businesses which were housed in one building were destroyed in a fire around 05:20 hrs yesterday on Charlotte Street, Bourda.
As of late yesterday, fire fighters were still trying to determine the cause for the blaze while hinting it might be electrical. The building is owned by Dow.
At the time of the fire, she was asleep in the upper flat of the three-storey structure.
Trans Caribbean International Shipping, Anetha’s African Boutique, Target Services Pest Control, Hardwood Veneers (Guyana) Limited and the Westmas Acupuncture Clinic were all businesses which were housed in the building.
Dow said that she heard the fire alarm in the kitchen but when she went to investigate, she did not see any smoke.
She added that when she went down to the middle floor, she noticed thick smoke coming through the floor boards after which she immediately woke the other occupants and searched for the pets—by this time, most of the building had engulfed in smoke.
The woman noted that while she was in the building, she called for the Guyana Fire Service and by the time she reached outside, they were already at the scene.
Larry London, owner of Trans Caribbean International, said that the fire has caused a significant impact on his business.
He said that items belonging to a number of his clients have been affected by the fire but he is hoping that they would be understanding and patient.
Dow’s furniture store, Liana Cane furniture factory at Victoria Road, Plaisance was destroyed by a fire in January 2016.
