A fire yesterday left two families counting their losses as an afternoon blaze burnt through two units of a range house in Trench Road, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The fire which started around noon began at Lot 145 Trench Road, according to Natasha Delph, who resides at Lot 146. She said that she and her family were asleep when the fire started. Delph said that she lives with her husband, two daughters and two grandchildren. She said that her sister, who lives aback of her, noticed the fire at the neighbour’s unit and raised an alarm.
She recalled that earlier in the day she had pleaded with her husband to stay home and not go to work. “I tell he ‘Man don’t go to work, stay home with me. Now I don’t know wha mek I tell he stay home; and he lie down in the big chair downstairs and fall asleep. And then me sister come round and tell we, ‘“Look fire.’”
The woman said that they were not able to get all their belongings out of the house. “Everything can’t even hold through the door to come out.” She said that she first observed the fire crawling over into her unit through a bedroom upstairs.
She said that nobody was at home next door at the time the fire begun. “The woman went out and she son went to work.”
According to Delph’s husband, Andrew Forde, a bucket brigade was formed to douse the flames until fire attendants arrived. He said that the fire service’s response was prompt. “If they didn’t come, this whole place woulda burn down because it start spreading in the two other buildings next-door.”
Forde, who works at the Georgetown Mayor and City Council as a pump attendant, said that all the belongings were soaked inside the house on both floors. “They got a part on the roof where it start ketching and coming over by me. We gotta do some repairs there too.”
Despite the extensive damage to his home, he said that his family will have to mop-up as much as possible and sleep in the house because they have no other place to stay. “We gon gotta try and clean out and try and mek weself comfortable because we ain’t got nowhere else to go.”
He said that there was no power outage in the area so he believes that the fire might have been electrical in nature.
Based on information received, the unit in which the fire is said to have started is owned by 70-year-old Cynthia Johnson who resides at the premises with her son and niece. Reports are that Johnson, the last to leave home, did so around noon to visit the pharmacy to purchase medication.
It was there that neighbours informed her that her house was on fire. After returning home, Johnson noticed the upper flat of the home on fire. Responding to the fire were water tenders from West Ruimveldt and Central Fire Station.
