A 32-year-old vendor yesterday morning made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on an attempted murder charge and was placed on $150,000 bail.
Kurt Joseph of 166 Guyhoc Park Georgetown was not required to plead to the indictable charge which read that on June 18, at Tucville, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Travel December with the intent to murder him.
The accused was represented by Attorney Michael Somersall who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail, citing that he is the sole breadwinner for his family.
The lawyer in his application to secure bail for Joseph told the court that his client is the father of two and has never been charged before.
Police Prosecutor Mansfield told the court that he had no objection to bail being granted to the accused, but asked that conditions be attached to the bail.
The court heard that the accused and the virtual complainant (December) are known to each other.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, Joseph and December were at the Tucville ballfield playing a game of football when they had an argument.
The court heard that Joseph became annoyed and took out a knife from his waist and stabbed December to the left side of his chest.
December fell to the ground and was then picked up by public-spirited persons who rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted and underwent emergency surgery.
The prosecutor told the court that the injury the victim received was life-threatening and had the potential to cause death.
The magistrate, after granting the accused bail, told him that the conditions of the bail were that he must not go within 50 feet of the victim; must not contact the victim nor speak with any of the witnesses in the matter; and he must report to the East La Penitence Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trial.
The prosecution file is incomplete and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance on August 7.
