STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
STEM clubs are an effective and enjoyable way of engaging students in STEM subjects. They allow students to gain teamwork and leadership skills to tackle challenges and discover STEM-related careers.
This is evident as STEMGuyana has received more than 50 requests from community representatives about creating STEM clubs for youths to learn coding, robotics and mathematics enrichment through the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) mobile app.
After much deliberation, it has decided to expand the STEM programme throughout every administrative region, and is seeking support from the Diaspora.
According to STEMGuyana, it will commence working with local leaders to have those clubs registered after returning from Washington, District of Colombia (DC) USA, where a team will represent Guyana at the inaugural robot Olympics later this month.
STEMGuyana is still working on finding a location for a permanent office where it can store valuable equipment, host weekly youth programmes and conduct training courses.
“As we work with local contacts to register new clubs, the goal is to train and then enrol youth into our coding league, robotics league and math league. These leagues will be competitive and STEMGuyana’s league committee plans to issue weekly multi-disciplinary challenges that will help students to practice what they learn in school while strengthening their logical, critical thinking, coding and innovation skills. National winners will receive prizes which will include laptops, tablets and other technical and electronic equipment,” STEMGuyana said.
“One approach we considered was to enlist communities that were recently brought online by the E-governance department. The department made computers and internet connectivity available in accessible public locations. Alternately, we considered partnering with the more than 40 community contacts who have reached out to our programme, and to coordinate with them to create clubs locally. Either way, there is currently opportunity for communities to begin the process of creating their own STEM clubs.”
If you know of any suitable locations for STEMGuyana’s headquarters and wish to lend support, you can email them at stemguyana@gmail.com.
Recently, STEMGuyana hosted Guyana’s first inaugural robot and technology exhibition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The fundraiser and educational event was co-ordinated by STEMGuyana co-founder Karen Abrams. The event, which was attended by First Lady Sandra Granger, saw participation from several senior secondary schools and STEM clubs displaying innovative and educational robot creations. The exhibition was supported by the Ministry of Education and several local businesses.
