US$150M expansion…CJIA shifts to temporary terminal amid continuing works

which is set to be completed this year, is entering a critical phase. The new temporary terminal for arrivals became operational as of yesterday, to allow the contractor to complete works on the new building.
As a result of the schedule works, the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) disclosed that its Baggage Scanner at the arrival terminal will be relocated from its current position to the temporary facility. That location is east of the current terminal.
“CJIA Management has advised that the new Temporary Arrival Terminal, may be operational between Thursday, June 29, 2017 and Sunday, July 2, 2017,” GRA disclosed yesterday.
GRA said that the relocation of the scanner scheduled for yesterday would have resulted in its shutdown on advice of the technical personnel.
“This action, which is necessary so as to ensure a safe and secure relocation, will result in a minimum down-time/disruption of important service to travelers, stakeholders, importers, exporters, consolidators, and bond operators.”

The authority also disclosed that the CJIA expansion project is also likely to impact the day-to-day duties and functions of Customs Operations since the area which Customs and other CJIA operations currently occupy will soon be demolished and superseded by a larger and more modern departure area.
The airport officials have been meeting with the Red Cap porters and taxi drivers to keep them updated on the temporary Arrivals Building, the airport says.
The expansion, including a longer runway, is set to be completed this yearend.
