The Lions Club of Essequibo Coast on Saturday installed its new Board of Directors for the fiscal year of 2017- 2018 as it completed its 25th year of service to that Region Two area.
At the installation ceremony, held at the Club’s Den in Anna Regina, three club members who for over 25 years gave sterling service were issued certificates of recognition (Milestone Chevron Award) from the Lions Club International.
Among the awardees were Sammy Rampersaud, Tamesh Jagmohan and Salim Barakat. Missing from the event was Bernard Young. The four are the only remaining of the original members. Two new members were also sworn in as new lions to the Den.
The members were updated as to the work of the club last year. According to club President, Sareva Rampersaud, there is optimism that the fiscal year 2017-2018 would be a successful and productive one.
However, only 40% of the club’s health project as budgeted was completed. There were a number of projects including dental care to Lima Sands and a donation to the Suddie Hospital.
The club has especially been busy on the Essequibo coast for its eye care project.
The Lions Club has been partnering with a Canadian vision care team with doctors and volunteers. The team would visit the Essequibo Coast every two years to offer free eye care for more than a 1000 persons over a five-day period.
The club has also been dispensing spectacles to patients and has been playing a part in the education system.
Director of the club, Shabir Singh, said that members should be reminded to foster community development.
“My fellow Lions, remember your purpose is to collectively work towards changing your community. The only way to extend is to have love and team spirit. You need to understand that this club needs to co-exist with the community. There are times when we come to meeting and don’t discuss the community. Instead we discuss ourselves and fight within ourselves.”
