Police response to TIP cases discussed
… as Security Minister, GWMO meet
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) response to suspected trafficking in person (TIP) cases was among some of the issues discussed on Monday when the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, met with the Guyana Women Miners Organization (GWMO).
The meeting was scheduled to discuss how the collaboration between the GWMO and the Ministerial Task Force can be improved.
President of the GWMO, Urica Primus, said that the organization had written to the Public Security Ministry to discuss how the combined agencies can fight against TIP.
The GWMO’s role in fighting trafficking in persons and its partnerships with Government Agencies were also discussed at the meeting.
Some other topics included the need for better information sharing during ongoing trafficking in persons’ cases; the response of the GPF to reports of suspected TIP cases and the issue of drugs in schools.
Those meeting with the Minister include GWMO’s resident, Urica Primus; Vice President, Ms. Donna Charles; Head of TIP Unit, Marina Charles and Donna Scott, Committee Member and Area Representative.
The organization was encouraged to increase its investment with regard to its participation in activities conducted by the Task Force.
Ramjattan expressed his gratitude to the GWMO for their work on behalf of the victims of trafficking in persons and for other actions displayed over the years in its attempts to help combat the crime, starting with the interventions of now Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes.
The Task Force was formed to provide information about TIPs and safe migration to vulnerable communities; to improve cooperation mechanisms among key stakeholders to prevent TIPs; to enhance capacity of hinterland communities to prevent TIPs; to provide appropriate and comprehensive direct assistance to victims; to enhance capacity of stakeholders to identify victims and provide direct assistance through training; to formalize and strengthen the inter-agency protocol for responding to trafficking in persons; to enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to investigate TIPs; and to enhance cooperative and enforcement mechanisms among neighbouring countries to convict traffickers and protect victims.
