The child, Isaiah Smartt, a student of a David Street, Kitty School, was found by residents around 19:00hrs face down in about 12 inches of water, Kaieteur News was told.
A cousin of the deceased told this publication that Smartt’s mother had “missed” him on Monday but didn’t suspect anything was amiss since the youngster would often leave home to visit his father who lives close by.
“His mother missed him yesterday (Monday) but she didn’t take it for anything because he would normally go by his father. Is a normal thing he does do,” the woman said.
The scene last evening attracted people from as far as Kitty. When the police ranks showed up, persons were pleading with the ranks to have the matter “properly” investigated since many are of the opinion that foul-play was involved.
The area where the boy’s body was discovered, serves as a thoroughfare. It is alleged that the area is filled with illegal electrical connections.
The police ranks on scene offered no comment.
Smartt’s mother, Jocelyn Pickett, was too shocked to speak to media operatives. His father could not be located at the time to get a comment.
The youngster was described as a “mannerly youth-man” and a “champion cricketer in the making”. He is survived by his six siblings.
