A message to Guyanese of African and Indian ancestry

Dear Editor,
Is it that you like to live in poverty and insecurity? Is it that you prefer to live in poverty, insecurity and tense conditions rather than harmoniously, prospering and more securely? Ask your political leaders why they are afraid of a united Guyana, in particular a united labour force? Can’t you see the game your political leaders are playing, using your anger and frustration to manufacture hatred between you, all for political capital?
Can’t you see that your continued support to political groups on the basis of “racial” familiarity and identification continues to produce successive governments that start out well intended but end up being corrupted or bankrupted? This keeps us in a prolonged cycle of expectancy, disappointment, poverty and insecurity.
Do you not know that the two major political parties you support, use the strategy of dividing the labour force (that is the common working class woman and man) to manufacture their support bases? Do you not know this was the same strategy the white man used to divide the labour force after slavery (Africans) and indentureship (primarily Indians)?
Is it that you don’t see these things or you prefer to live together in hostility than prosperity? Do you understand that Walter Rodney established the Working People’s Alliance because he recognized that the labour force, once united would give a voice and platform to working class Guyanese to collectively improve our living standards?
Ask your political leaders and parties why they preach so much distrust of the group or other parties, instead of encouraging you to interact, promote togetherness and understanding as one Guyanese? Recognize interaction and togetherness doesn’t mean you support one party or the other, it recognizes that you must value your ‘Guyaneseness’ and the value of our togetherness to promote a prosperous and more secure country.
Guyanese of African and Indian ancestry are both the problem and solution to Guyana’s poverty and security concerns. We have to want prosperity, togetherness and security more than we want separateness, hostility and poverty. Do you want it?
