Two young civil engineers were yesterday remanded to prison after they appeared before a city magistrate in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Aviskar Rambarran of Enmore, East Coast Demerara, and Michael Sookhoo of Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, both 20, denied the charge which alleged that on June 8 at Grove, East Bank Demerara, they had in their possession 254 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The men were both represented by Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry who in his application to secure bail for his clients told the court that on the day in question, his clients were in a rented vehicle when they were stopped by a party of police officers who informed them that the car was suspected to have been involved in a robbery.
Henry went on to tell the court that his clients were instructed to go at the police station, and it was when the car was searched, that the narcotics were found in the glove compartment of the vehicle.
However Police Prosecutor Adunni Inniss objected to bail being granted to the defendants, citing the serious nature and gravity of the offence, as well as the penalty the charge attracts.
The prosecutor went on to tell the court that on the day in question, police acting on information stopped the defendants, who were in a car proceeding along the East Bank Demerara highway at Grove, around 13:30 hrs.
The court heard that when the police conducted the search on the vehicle the narcotics were found in the glove compartment. When the men were questioned by the police they allegedly stated “Is just a small hustle, give we a second chance nah.”
Both men were remanded and they will make their next court appearance on June 26.
