(Kaieteur News) – A former enslaver and colonizer, a former grand imperial power, could stand in defiance of the US. The UK could do that for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba. The formerly enslaved and indentured, a former colony, now an oil power, did not have the courage of its convictions, the decency to vote for or against the US embargo on Cuba. Guyana could not even stand and go on record as putting in a word for Cuba. Guyana found a rock under which to hide its face, and there buried itself. It took the coward’s way out of its predicament: abstained from voting.
It is becoming more apparent that the “special relationship” supposedly existing between Guyana and the US is a product of the imagination of Guyana’s leaders, with President Irfaan Ali in the front row. Whatever he and US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, concocted, it is special for the US only, and only in the interests of the US side of the relationship. If this is a special friendship, then someone in the PPPC Government needs to explain why Guyana is always left with the role of stooge and puppet? A country that is hampered from making its own choices. A polity whose leaders are so crippled by fear of the US that they cannot even stand for a friend. An independent nation that might as well be enslaved, so much it is in the grip of the US, so much it reinforces the image of a pawn. The UK could cast a vote at the UN for the lifting of the US embargo on the distressed peoples of Cuba, but Guyana tucked its tail between its legs and beat a sickening retreat.
What happened to the president’s pride? Where is the ruling party’s sense of loyalty? For what has Cuba not been to the People’s Progressive Party in its barren days, if not a faithful friend? A constant companion when Dr. Cheddi Jagan was condemned to the wear the mantle of US outcast? Indeed, the PPPC Government has compiled a distasteful record of being a betrayer of friends, a betrayer of principles, and a betrayer of trust. Unfortunately, the PPPC Government seemingly thinks nothing of continuing to add to its sleazy record. If the PPPC can walk on its own people, then turn its back on its poor, rank-and-file supporters, how much would Cubans and their struggles feature in the concerns of Guyana’s governing party?
Few are the citizens of Guyana, who would have believed that this country would treat Cuba so shabbily. Fewer still can believe that the UK could vote as it did (for Cuba), but Guyana could not even raise its hand and commit to a Yes or No vote. What else would this government, that likes to boasts of its strengths, not do, not consider to be going too far, or giving in too much, to please the US? Whenever there is an issue that has meaning to the US, there is one accompanying feature that is now so prominent that it is inseparable. The imprint of Guyana on the ground is sprawled and fixed, so complete is its government’s surrender to what the US demands, what the US expects.
We at this paper have some difficulty assessing how senior leaders in the PPPC Government face the citizens of this country, after all that Cuban medical personnel have done for the people in their times of need. How does PPPC Government officials face members of the diplomatic corps, particularly those who represent countries from this region? It is certain that those foreigners know that local leaders are all about big talk and lacking in testicular and intestinal fortitude. Citizens have been abandoned by the PPPC Government, forced to submit, so that the interests of US oil giant, ExxonMobil could flourish without pause, without any giving up of so much as a dime or a dollar. Cubans have been left on their own, so that a weak PPPC Government could prove itself again as willing and ready to jump to whatever is the bidding of the US. Guyana is not a country. The PPPC Government has made Guyana into an international disgrace.

(Kaieteur News) – I shared space with former President Donald Ramotar twice, when he was the main man. Wasn’t a heavy-duty admirer.
