Dear Editor,
For some reason or the other, it is clear as daylight that some measure of fear exists in residents of Region 2. They need to come out of complacency and speak out against the wrong things as well as injustices that face them for their own betterment and well being. By being a coward, it contributes to one’s own downfall and to be fearful of reprisal is nothing less than living for no useful purpose. A lot of nonsense ever so much detrimental to the community is taking place in this region and at some point and time it will have to stop through diligent efforts of representatives for this to happen.
With each of the R.D.C. in the Regions having its own Public Health Officer it is very mush preposterous and foolhardy for only the one in the Anna Regina town to be assigned with the responsibility to issue sanitary passes which in a glorified way is called Certificate of Fitness to business owners throughout the region which stretches from Pomeroon to Supenaam.
Obviously, even a fool can see the unnecessary inconvenience and hardship with the waste of precious time and travelling money that would have to be endured by the far reaching business owners to travel all the way to Anna Regina to get a pass which could be issued at the R.D.C. office within the location and be done so conveniently.
The pass is a compulsory requirement showing that Public Health standards have been complied with for the renewal of licences. Without the pass it will not be possible to get a licence renewed. While the pass is for free distribution a racket was exposed some years ago after allegations had surfaced of two female employees attached to the Public Health office at Anna Regina collecting payment of one thousand dollars to issue a pass.
After the police were called in to carry out investigations, statements were collected from several business owners confirming the payment of the pass which was linked to an illegal transaction but it would seem that there was “cover-up” somewhere along the line. Since my intervention the racket ended but not before millions of dollars were collected over the years in the racket which occurred during the regime of the previous Government. My main concern now is for good common sense to prevail for the business owners to get their passes at the location nearest to them. Let there be immediate change to the system for the sake of convenience to the business owners who are so affected.
