The Futsal rivalries will continue next weekend
when Xtreme Clean and Maintenance Company host their inaugural Gold Rush Futsal tournament inside the National Gymnasium, beginning on Independence night with six games scheduled.
Some of the country’s top Futsal teams will descend at the venue for the event, which is set to kick off at 5pm each night. The tournament will continue June 27, 28 and 30; the following weekend will host the quarterfinal and semi-finals with Finals set for June 10.
Twenty four teams will be invited to participate in the tournament. The winning team will win a whopping $500,000 (2 ½ ounces of gold), while second place takes home $200,000 (1 ounce of gold), third place $100,000 (½ ounce of gold) and fourth place $50,000; trophies will accompany all of the cash prizes. The MVP will also receive gold jewellery.
These details were revealed yesterday when one of the architects of the event, Roger Cambridge, spoke with Kaieteur Sport. The competition, he said, had originated from youths of the Hadfield Street area to promote entrepreneurship. He said the activity is to get youths involved in positive activity while promoting sport and launching the cleaning company.
The proprietor of the Xtreme Clean and Maintenance Company informed that they have engaged all major stakeholders to make the event a possibility, including the Guyana Police Force, which will be providing security each night for the Futsal showdown.
Cambridge informed that the event has the blessings of the President of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA), Clifton Hicken, who has sanctioned the competition.
The cleaning company has a motto that says “We work hard so you don’t have to,” and Cambridge noted that the group has been putting in a lot of hard work to make the event a success.
“Mr. Hicken is giving us a lot of support and we really appreciate that. We believe that this will be a very good competition for the community and we encourage everyone to support a positive venture for our youths,” Cambridge told Kaieteur Sport.
In addition to the hefty cash prizes for the teams, there will be giveaways each night for patrons, who will have the opportunity to win pennyweights of gold through novelty activities such as the penalty kick and freestyle skill challenge.
Some of the confirmed sponsors include Trophy Stall, Fasgrafix and Jefford’s Distribution and Sales; Giftland Distribution Store and FARMSUP Mining Investments Inc.
The organisers said that the tournament will be held annually.
