Dear Editor,
Thanks as usual to Freddie Kissoon for his brave article in the May 5 edition of Kaieteur News; it was insightful and honest as usual. I just want to say I think the main reason why Guyanese Indians are racially oriented is because of a lack of respect for each other between Indians and Blacks in Guyana and it all starts with one simple issue. We have got to stop addressing each other as BLACKMAN and COOLIE. The government should have put laws in place or at least keep sending a message to the populace that these terms aren’t acceptable. Using Trinidad as an example, you do not hear them addressing each other this way period. I think this simple issue has shaped the entire nation from the time the two races came together in Guyana and until the Guyanese leaders start recognizing what a major issue this is, we will continue to live this way. Guyana cannot see progress until Indians and Blacks start respecting each other in earnestness. Thanks for the opportunity to say my piece and maybe someone can add to this.
Colin Grant
