Plans to have modernized police stations across the country are in the pipeline, according to Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan.
The Minister said that the government is working to modernize most, if not all, police stations within the next two years.
First on the agenda is rehabilitation of the sexual and domestic violence units at the various police stations.
This move will see victims of sexual and domestic violence having privacy when they are making a report.
Ramjattan said that currently, rehabilitation works have begun on eight police stations. There are rooms to allow victims of abuse to relate their story in privacy.
“The first steps are being made to ensure that we do rehabilitate existing policing stations that can then accommodate at least a room,” the Minister noted while adding that the work will take some time because of the procurement process.
Once completed, training will be required for police officers to handle these cases. Rehabilitation work is being done under the Citizen Security Programme.
In 2014, the then Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster, established the special unit to handle reports of rape and domestic violence in Guyana.
Webster had indicated that there will be specially trained investigators to deal with the victims of these crimes.
She had said that the unit will work in close collaboration with the Guyana Police Force and upon reporting an incident; the victim will be placed in a special room, with all the key participants, including a medical examiner.
The private room was intended to create an encouraging atmosphere where victims can come forward and report incidents of sexual abuse. The unit will also have a support system for victims of rape.
