The recently registered Guyana Committee of Service, headed by the CEO of the Payless Variety Store, last Saturday presented monetary Awards to three of the five Medalists and two of the three Coaches who attended this year’s CARIFTA Games during the Easter weekend in Curacao where this Country won eight medals including four Gold Medals, a Silver and three Bronze.
The presentation of Awards was made by Guyana’s double CARIFTA Games Gold Medalist and former Guyana Middle Distance Champion Lorrie Ann Adams during the ‘Payless Happy Hour’ TV programme last Saturday at NCN. Compton Caesar, Claudrice McKoy and Anfernee Headecker along with Coaches Junior Edmonds and Moses Pantliz all received Cash rewards for making Guyana proud.
Adams made the presentation to the athletes on behalf of Payless Variety Store’s and CEO of Star Party Rentals Lennox Cush.
One other athlete; Chantoba Bright and Coach Johnny Gravesande, both from Linden along with American based Natricia Hooper, who won a Gold Medal in the triple jump, were unavoidably absent last Saturday. The pair from Region 10 will receive their Awards for their outstanding performances in Curacao on this Saturday’s programme of ‘Payless Happy Hour’ on NCN, while Hooper’s will be collected on her behalf.
Caesar (100m gold & 200m bronze), Bright (long jump gold & triple jump bronze), McKoy (300m gold& 1500m bronze), Headecker (1500m silver) and USA based Hooper provided Guyana with best ever results since the inaugural three-day event was held from April 1-4, 1972 in Barbados.
Caesar’s, who hails from Linden, won Guyana’s first gold Medal in the 100-metre Boys’ Under-20 race and also took bronze in the U-20 Boys’ 200-metres.
Caesar’s 10.46 seconds, was better than Barbados’ Jaquone Hoyte’s 10.47 and Jamaica’s Jelani Walker who finished in 10.61 seconds, while Hooper’s gold in the Girls’ U-18 triple jump came with a leap of 13.08 meters after she was disqualified in the 400m for a false start.
McKoy, who lives in the City, won gold in the U-18 3000m with a time of ten minutes 39.03 seconds (10:39.03) and Bright jumped a distance of 5.91 meters to win the gold medal, were the gold medals winners for Guyana.
Meanwhile, Lady Ira Lewis, President of the New Jersey Foundation was a part of the Motorcade from the Airport with Guyana’s 12-member CARIFSTA team and presented a Trophy on behalf of ‘Moulded Designs’ a company owned by Leslie Black, a former Amateur Boxer and Athletics Coach for the last 25 years.
