Anna Regina power plant is an environmental disaster

Dear Editor,
It is with utmost concern that I write this letter to you. The concern centers around development on the Essequibo Coast and more particularly focuses on the electricity plant at Anna Regina and soon to be Cereal Factory commissioned by the previous Administration.
The electricity plant at Anna Regina is presently an environmental disaster as regards the level of noise pollution that emanates from this plant. Residents as far away as two to three streets away are unable to sleep at nights as a result of the force of vibrations that reverberates all around. One affected resident who happens to be a school teacher said, “I sit at my desk to read/study at nights and find it hard to even think because of the huge sledge hammer pounding away in the night air.”
One resident who lives nearby is now sick in bed as his whole house reverberates so much that the very walls literally shake. He and his wife made several complaints to those in charge but got no form of satisfaction or relief but only to be told that they are aware of the noise level but can’t do anything about it. Is it because this is Essequibo that there is no need for any kind of study by the E.P.A. or whichever relevant authority to access the impact of any industry on the people and the surrounding areas especially when such an industry is placed in close proximity to residential areas?
Why is it that G.P.L. has not erected sound-proof walls around the plant to prevent noise pollution? The situation is now untenable and residents are left with no other option but to launch protest actions to have this situation corrected. 1. Then there is the cereal factory, this one seems to be crowded with secrecy. No one can answer satisfactorily these questions:
1. Who is really the person in charge/ the owner?
2. What is the impact of its operations on the environment?
3. Would there be any pollution of the air, land or water in the area where residents live? (And residents live in very close proximity to the factory.)
Residents would be very grateful for an early response to these matters which they see as very important to their health and well- being. We refuse to be treated like Cinderella.
