A Yarakita, Region One resident was shot dead after pointing a gun at a policeman around 07:45 hrs yesterday.
The dead man has been identified as Shaka Bourne. He was shot to the head by the same policeman that he drew a loaded firearm on.
According to information received, a police constable responded to several reports, including threats made by the deceased.
Reports are that on seeing the police rank, Bourne allegedly drew a loaded unlicensed revolver and threatened to shoot the rank.
The police in a release said that the cop then discharged a round from his service revolver, hitting him in the head.
Bourne was disarmed and taken to the Mabaruma Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The unlicensed .38 Revolver with five live matching rounds as well as the service weapon used by the policeman have been lodged.
In a release, the police said that a thorough investigation into the incident has since been launched by Divisional Commander, Senior Superintendent Ravindradat Budhram.
