It is the fourth month in the year and it seems like the cops are nowhere near solving the New Year’s Day double-execution at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, in which Desmond Singh and his friend, Azrudeen Hussain
lost their lives.
At least this is what the victims’ relatives believe, since according to them, no one from the Guyana Police Force has contacted them in months about possible developments.
Singh and Azrudeen Hussain were gunned down as they were heading home from a game-cock gambling spot in Friendship. Police believe that Singh was the intended target and Hussain just happened to be “at the wrong place at the wrong time”.
The last update the victims’ relatives received was when investigators had revealed that they were preparing to check surveillance footage in the area with the hope of identifying the shooter(s).
“We don’t know if they checked or didn’t check the cameras, because no one reached out to us with any information, and we definitely don’t want this to become another cold case,” one of the victims’ relatives said.
Initially, it was being reported that the shooting was linked to the game-cock fight from which the men were heading home. However, according to the relative, who asked not to be identified, they are yet to find out whether any connections were made.
Police sources had indicated that they were looking for at least two suspects in the execution-style murders. One of the individuals was held and subsequently released.
Shortly after the two men were executed, a close relative of Singh said that she was convinced someone from the gambling spot knew who killed them. She had pleaded with the police to interrogate those who were there.
The woman said that Singh, a poultry vendor, was one of the nicest persons around, and he had no enemies, but believes that he might have met his death as a result of jealously. “He was doing well and maybe someone envied him,” the woman opined.
Singh, who operated a successful poultry business at Bourda, was a big fan of “cock fights” and according to his relative, he spent all his Sundays visiting those gambling spots.
The police said that the victims were shot with assault rifles. At the scene, a rank was seen removing valuables, including a Smartphone and a small amount of cash, from Singh’s pockets. The fact that nothing was taken from the victims was one of the reasons that the police ruled out robbery as the motive.
Reports are that Singh won a few bets on roosters earlier in the day at another location, and later in the day, went to the Friendship spot to continue the game. It was there that he lost the money he won earlier in the day.
A source said that after losing his money, Singh borrowed $100,000 from someone there and lost that money in bets too. It was after losing that Singh and Hussain left to go home when they were attacked by gunmen who were hiding in nearby bushes.
The relatives of both men hope that the killers are caught soon so that justice can be served.
