No wonder people say, ‘bring back the Whiteman.’

Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me to congratulate you for publishing the letter of Ms. Tracey Abraham, captioned, “Pedestrian and passenger nightmare at the Georgetown Stelling roadway.” This is a situation that has been ongoing since Noah was a boy, or better yet since the British left these shores. You see Editor, when the British left, and gave us independence, they took away civilities, responsibilities and I venture to suggest, care and consideration for citizens. That is why we old people do say; “better the white man come back, or Jesus come and take back his world.”
The five C’s of responsible driving on our roads can be used in all areas of life in the country, and we would be closer to the good life required by President Granger, and in his memory, the “kind and transparent society” the late Cheddi Jagan wanted for us.
The resolution of the madness in relation to the said road as detailed in the A grade composition Ms. Tracey has eluded, those in control of Georgetown for decades and so it has now become relevant, to reproduce for all, statements and decisions made by the City Council, in the past, and to demand that wherever citizens cry for help, they must be answered forthwith.
I present for you Editor, portion of an article dated 1987-01-25, Guyana Chronicle which said: “ROAD FROM FERRY STELLING MUST BE CLEARED.”
It went like this, “Retail vendors selling on the road from the Demerara Ferry Stelling, Stabroek, have until Wednesday to remove .Georgetown Mayor Robert Williams has said. These vendors have an unfair advantage over legitimate vendors on the Stabroek wharf, attracting more customers. They also pose a traffic hazard, blocking pedestrians and vehicles leaving the stelling. This decision was taken following a visit to the Stabroek market on Tuesday by a top Council team, including members of the Markets and Abattoir Committee….; (end of quote):
Mr. Williams has gone to the great beyond, and perhaps his successors are not inclined to visit the areas under discussion. What if they feel that persons like Ms Tracy Abraham are nuisances? They see, too, much. They should see and not tell. On the other hand, do these people care, or know about how to govern a City? Did the citizens of Georgetown know who they voted into City Hall?
Articles in the press question the foreign travels of officials at City Hall. When these people travel, and they have to pass through Port of Spain, Bridgetown, not to mention New York, do they not observe orderliness among other factors for the good life? Can we not benefit from a fraction of what exists in these named cities, or are those who travel on taxpayers’ money, wear dark glasses and ride in dark tinted automobiles.
We think that Tracey’s missive is a good beginning for a series of newspaper articles depicting the ills of Georgetown, and we verily believe that more needs to be said publicly, and in the media especially on all matters affecting our daily lives. We are not questioning here the bona fides of the present occupants of City Hall, but we sorely miss the likes of Claude Merriman, Archibald Codrington, and others of their ilk. As we used to say at the end of our Consumers Association broadcasts, “do write on all matters affecting you as a consumer”
