The Carter Centre must be commended for this event

Dear Editor,
The Carter Centre must be commended for the convening of a Symposium on constitutional reform at the Turkeyen campus even though from media reports it was poorly attended. The turnout of university students and lecturers was disappointing but not unusual as students seem more concerned with preparing for exams and attending lectures than with what is perceived to be extracurricular event.
The importance of constitutional reform cannot be over emphasized. While it is fair to say that we have made significant advances in terms of constitutional reforms over the decades, we are still to come up with a governance mechanism that addresses the issue of ethnic insecurity and political alienation which have over the years taken its toll on the realization of our development potential. I stand corrected but we have, for the first time in our post-independence history, experienced a situation where a single party, the PPP/C, occupies the benches of the parliamentary opposition as all the others, including the AFC and the WPA, are now subsumed under the APNU-AFC umbrella.
I think the time is long overdue for a much more enlightened and inclusive governance paradigm driven by the best interests of Guyanese as a whole and not by narrow and sectarian interests. This is the task before us as a nation which must be spearheaded by those responsible for constitutional reforms with the full support of all stakeholders.
