A Brazilian national, who is so far unidentified, lost his life while working on a six-inch illegal mining dredge, the Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed.
The man died in a mining accident that occurred on Friday in Micobie, Region Eight.
Investigations have so far revealed that the dredge was said to be operating without permission from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). And that it was the Micobie Village Council that granted permission for the operation without consulting or informing GGMC.
Personnel from the GGMC are on the ground conducting preliminary investigations.
The name of the deceased miner will be released by the authorities in due course.
The Ministry expresses its sorrow and regret at this latest mining fatality and recommits to working with miners, and Amerindian Titled communities to make the industry safe, accident free and better regulated.
