Two men were on Wednesday remanded to prison for allegedly cultivating and trafficking marijuana after they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The men, Gregory Gregorius, 34, and Amos Hendricks, 37, both of Moca Moca Mountain, Central Rupununi both pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to them.
The first charge read that on March 21, last, at Moca Moca, Central Rupununi, they cultivated cannabis sativa.
It was also alleged that on the same day in question at the said location they had 2kg 230 grams of cannabis sativa in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that on the day in question Police were in the area carrying out an investigating due to the recovery of a body found in a shallow grave.
While carrying out the investigation the police officers discovered a camp area with one acre of plants which was later discovered to be a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems.
The prosecutor further stated that the defendants were found in the camp which is situated in the middle of the ganja farm.
According to Prosecutor Moore, the number two defendant, Amos Hendricks, was arrested and charge in September 2012 for being in possession of 68 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
The men were both represented by Attorney-at-Law Jerome Khan who asked that his clients be released on reasonable bail citing that his clients were not caught by police, cultivating the illicit items, nor were the marijuana found in their possession.
However, bail was refused and the men were remanded to prison. They will make there next court appearance on June 10, next, at the Lethem Magistrate Court.
