Dear Editor,
I read Freddie Kissoon’s article on 3/7/17 about Ravi Dev and Ryhaan Shah and was amazed, to say the least. He said that these two persons are “people who ideologically believe in ethnic superiority in Guyana.” I don’t know how he arrived at this conclusion. All they appear to be doing is what is done in all societies throughout the world; where members of a group, remind their members to do what is necessary to protect their rights and interests. Freddie Kissoon said that Ravi Dev “urged Indian people to resist and rise up to protect what Indian people have”.
What is wrong with that statement? What is unacceptable about it? Like I said earlier, this is what all groups remind their members to do. He concluded by saying “Indian people, then, should put some faith in rulers from other communities, for example, the African and Amerindian communities” I have no idea what this means.
What it shows however is that Freddie Kissoon is so afraid of being an Indian or being called one and is so concerned that his black friends continue to embrace him, that he is willing to pen criticisms about Indian folks who stand up for their rights. I ask him – Is there anything wrong about appointing the folowing attorneys to do work on behalf of the Government; Michael Somersall, Hewely Griffith, Lawrence Harris, Patrice Henry, Compton Richardson, and Trenton Lake. I ask him, what about Permanent Secretaries in the Guyana Government?
We can go on but what is clear is that in a society where the major business in conducted by the government, Certain Guyanese are being targeted. Some Indo Guyanese must therefore stand up and demand their rights and if Freddie Kissoon cannot understand that this is no different from Afro Guyanese or Amerindian Guyanese demanding their rights and if his vision is blurred, he should be prevented from writing for this newspaper, except perhaps that his extreme comments do increase readership.
