Improving science performance in the public education system could hinge on Guyana’s participation in a workshop slated for later this month in St. Kitts. Given its importance, Government has granted approval for the Ministry of
Education to register its presence at the upcoming event.
Speaking at yesterday’s session of Post Cabinet press briefing Minister of State Joseph Harmon informed that “approval has been granted for the participation at the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teachers’ training workshop to be held in St. Kitts from March 29-30, 2017.”
The workshop in question, according to Harmon, was organised by the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) and the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS). And according to the Minister, it is expected that the planned event will focus on having teachers better understand how students learn science.
CSF was established as an independent non-profit non-governmental organization in 2010 by the Caribbean Diaspora for Science, Technology and Innovation (CADSTI). CADSTI has its centre of gravity outside the Region, and its primary function is to mine and mobilize the resources in the worldwide Caribbean Diaspora in support of the CSF.
On the other hand, the idea of establishing CAS was informally proposed at the General Assembly Meeting of the International Council of Scientific Unions [ICSU] in Bern, Switzerland in September 1986.
Current membership stands at over 200 members, including scientists from the English-speaking Caribbean, Guadeloupe, Cuba, Guyana and Suriname. It is an independent, non-governmental body aiming to: provide a forum for interchange among scientists on important issues related to the application of science and technology to development; serve as a source of advice to regional, governmental and non-governmental organizations in scientific and technology matters; facilitate cooperation among scientists and promote the coordination and execution of scientific research in all its aspects.
It also aims to: liaise with relevant research organizations and assist in facilitating their mutual interaction; recognize and reward outstanding performance and achievement within the region in the fields of science and technology; raise the level of scientific consciousness in the region and increase the public understanding and appreciation of the importance and potential of science and technology in human progress; establish and maintain high standards and ethics in all scientific endeavour.
The planned workshop planned will, moreover, seek to identify strategies for STEM-based science teaching and increase the confidence of teachers in their planning and teaching and assessment approaches.
Set to attend the conference, based on Government’s approval, is National Science Coordinator within the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), Ms Petal Punalall-Jetoo.
