Three men were yesterday remanded to prison over separate robberies that occurred on Mashramani Day. Joshua Samad, 21, of Sparendaam, New Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara; and Shawn Smith, 18, of Sussex Street, Charlestown, were indicted yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Particulars of the charge against Samad stated that on February 23, last, at Georgetown, while in the company of others, he robbed Rabindra Susankar of $7,000 cash and two cellular phones all totalling $33,000. And immediately before, or after the robbery Samad made use of personal violence to Susankar.
Smith’s charge stated that on February 23, last, at Brickdam, while in the company of others, he robbed Shivani Sooklall of a white jersey and an Edge cell phone valued $258,000.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Attorney Gwendolyn Bristol, making a bail application on behalf of Samad, told the court that her client is not a flight risk. The attorney disclosed that Samad was charged before for disorderly behaviour.
Smith who was unrepresented said that he works at a mechanic shop.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves opposed bail citing the nature and prevalence of the offences. In Samad’s case, Prosecutor Gonsalves pointed to the fact that violence was used towards the virtual complainant.
The prosecutor also highlighted the penalties attached to the offences.
Meanwhile, in another case, a resident of Lot 123 Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown was also remanded to prison for allegedly robbing a man at knife- point on Mash Day.
The man Pascal Smith, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on February 23, at Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Shabudeen Khan of a cell phone and $142,000 cash. Prosecutor Gonsalves opposed pre trial liberty for Smith based on the fact that a knife was used during the commissioning of the robbery.
Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered the three robbery accused to make another court appearance on March 20.
