Dear Editor,
During his tenure as President, Mr. Jagdeo very seldom behaved in a presidential manner. There were numerous instances in which he cuss-down and verbally assaulted those citizens of this country who had often expressed opposing views. He was the all-powerful monarch behind the throne during Ramotar’s pseudo presidency. He could barely resist the temptation to openly dictate policies to Ramotar such as the ill-fated prorogue of Parliament and the calling of elections which led to the defeat of the PPP.
Without verbalizing any policies, Jagdeo seems committed and happy to criticize the present administration on almost every issue, including its promotion of national unity. Many Guyanese believe that Jagdeo has absolutely no interest in social cohesion. In fact while national cohesion is likely to help the coalition retain power, the PPP seems convinced that such a scenario is a recipe for its demise. The actual goal of Jagdeo and his cohorts at Freedom House is to continue to divide the races and spread propaganda and distort the truth.
Recently Jagdeo had proposed several policies on how to keep the sugar industry afloat. However, a careful examination of those policies has shown that they have not only failed under his regime but have exposed how deceitful he is. Under Jagdeo’s stewardship, the sugar industry collapsed despite the US$ 208 million of the taxpayers’ money to build the White Elephant at Skeldon and the packaging plant at Enmore. Lest we forget, it was Jagdeo who has made the sugar industry dependent on the government for subsidies in order to gain votes from the sugar workers.
We want Jagdeo and his PPP cronies to know that it is insane and delusional for the government to fork out $20 billion every year to sustain the sugar industry, which is clearly in decline. While such an approach was quite convenient to him since most of the beneficiaries are PPP supporters, it is clearly not the case with this government. It seems that he does not care that the sugar industry is a monumental burden on the people.
Through the years, mismanagement has led to the squandering of hundreds of millions that were provided by the EU and UK instead of providing alternatives to diversify the sugar industry. Like many others, this writer believes that Jagdeo is a hypocrite and a manipulator. This administration will do well to ignore his advice since it would simply be of little value.
His arrogance, vindictiveness and his belief that only he knows how to run the country have caused him to ignore proper, and the genuine council from experienced and qualified people. Many viewed him as a demagogue and would stand firm against this chauvinist, narcissist and divisive character.
