Less than 24 hours after 11 persons were left homeless following a fire on Princes Street, an eight-year-old boy and his grandmother were lucky to escape unhurt as their Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt house went up in
flames.
Deputy Fire Chief Compton Sparman told reporters that the fire started in the top flat of the two-storey wooden and concrete structure.
Reports are that around 13:00hrs yesterday, the grandmother, who owns the house, was tending to some chores downstairs, when the child, who was playing upstairs, alone and unsupervised, rushed to her with the news that there was a massive fire upstairs.
The two managed to safely rush out of the house, and began screaming for help. By the time fire fighters got to the location a few minutes later, the upper flat of the structure was completely destroyed.
What is commendable though is that swift action by the fire service has left neighbours only tallying the cost of paint, instead of their entire houses.
Unable to even begin counting his family’s losses, the child’s father Sven Chase told reporters that “the house had everything in it. Everything that a house should have, it had it in there.”
Although broken-hearted, Chase is extremely relieved and thankful that his son and mother-in-law were able to escape unhurt. An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the fire.
Meanwhile, the cause of Wednesday night’s Princes Street fire remains unknown as investigators continue their work.
