A Canadian national was yesterday remanded to prison after she was arraigned before Chief
Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ court to answer to the charge of possession of narcotics.
The charge read that on January 24, last, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, Anastasia LaRose had in her possession 4.178 Kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The 19-year-old was represented by Attorney –at-Law Glenn Hanoman, who in a bail application for his client, told the court that his client suffers from a medical condition which affects her both physically and psychologically, and therefore his client is easily exploited.
Hanoman further stated that the attempts to retrieve his client’s medical documents are proving futile due to the fact that they are currently in Trinidad and Canada.
He told the court that if bail is granted to his client she will return for the trial because she is the holder of one travel document which is currently in police custody at the Narcotics branch.
Hanoman further stressed that his client has a six-month-old baby that needs to be with her mother and that it’s the first time that she visited Guyana.
Police ranks of the Narcotics Branch at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, around 06:30 hrs conducted a search on the defendant who was an outgoing passenger on a flight to Toronto, Canada.
According to the police, she was arrested after four parcels of cocaine were found in her suitcase. The substance was tested, weighed and amounted to 4.178 Kilograms.
Police Prosecution Deniro Jones objected to the defendant being granted bail based on the fact that she is not a Guyanese and does not have a local address and if granted bail she will not return to the court for the trial.
Bail was denied and the Magistrate ordered that the defendant be examined by a psychiatrist.
She was remanded to prison and will make her next court appearance on February 3.
