The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) supported International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Level I Coach and Titans Table Tennis Club Coach and President, Dwain Dick, who pursued an ITTF Level II certification that
was held at the G.C Foster College, Winter Pen Road, Spanish Town, Jamaica.
ITTF expert, Christian Lilleroos conducted the programme that concluded on Sunday. Lilleroos is one of the most experienced ITTF experts with over 30 courses across the world and on the North American Inter Collegiate Circuit, according to a GTTA press release.
Lilleroos served as Head Coach of several top table tennis universities and colleges. Stephen Grant of Jamaica assisted him as the Coordinator. Lilleroos is in Jamaica as part of the ITTF and International Olympic Committee Development of a National Sports Structure Programme for Table Tennis.
Held under the auspices of the Jamaica Table Tennis Association, the Latin American Table Tennis Federation and ITTF encourage regional participation in such courses for eligible Coaches, who would have conducted Level I certification over the last year.
The ITTF Level II certification covers how to teach much higher level technical skills to fulfill the needs of athletes from ages 1—15 years old and/or from their 5th to 10th year of development (less reliant on the coach).
The ITTF fully recognises the Coach and has the following requirement in order for successful completion: attendance at 36 hours course conducted by an ITTF approved expert; passing both an oral and written exam.
In addition Dick will have to undergo 50 hours of coaching practice, which he must be complete. Five of the 50 hours must be supervised by a person appointed by the ITTF course conductor using the ITTF Confidential Coaching Report before the certification is issued.
“The GTTA views Coaching as a critical and pivotal pillar upon which the sport must be built in order to improve the technical and tactical capacity of our players and by extension the game. There needs to be higher levels of accredited coaches,” the release noted.
The GTTA held an ITTF Level II Coaching Programme in August 2014, from which four Coaches were successful, including Linden Johnson, Melissa Dow-Richardson, Muniram Persaud and Raynor Anderson.
Gibrain Safaraz Hussein and Idi Lewis, who also has an ICECP certification, are the other certified Level II Coaches.
“The GTTA sees this as raising the level of the players and creating the catalyst for improving the institutional structure such as club tournaments and training players at various technical levels,” the release added. Dick is set to return to Guyana today.
