Robb Street triple-murder/arson…Police Inspector, Fire Officer testify

The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder of Feresa and Theresa Rozario and their father, Hilrod Thomas continued yesterday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, with testimonies from Police Inspector Mohan Khan and Fire Officer Jacquelyn Greene.
The PI is being done by Paper Committal.
Theresa Rozario, 15, and her 12-year-old sister, Feresa Rozario were burnt to death after an early morning fire gutted a Robb Street, Georgetown building they occupied with their father. This occurred in November 2014.
The two sisters, who were reportedly asleep, were trapped in the inferno. Thomas, 63, managed to jump through a window to escape the raging flames. He, however, sustained second and third degrees burns and later succumbed while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Investigations in this matter took police two years to crack. A drug addict reportedly confessed to police that he was offered money to set fire to the disputed building. Police believe that the building was torched to drive out individuals who were also claiming ownership of the property by prescriptive rights.
Ganga Krishna, 72, a businessman of 11 North Road, Bourda, Georgetown, and his employee, Avishkar Kissoon, 24, of 1 Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, are currently on remand for the capital offence. They are being represented by Attorneys Nigel Hughes and Mursaline Bacchus respectively.
Inspector Khan and Fire Officer Greene were cross-examined by Attorney Bacchus. Also facing cross examination was Rosemary Rozario, a relative of the deceased.
Rozario testified to identifying the burnt bodies of the children at the mortuary, while Inspector Khan testified in relation to an identification parade (ID) he conducted.
It was an emotional testimony from Clarissa Rosario, the children’s mother, which prompted the Chief Magistrate to have the PI completed by paper committal. During her testimony, the older Rozario fainted while standing in the witness box.
The attorneys are still to cross examine Detective Inspector Suraj Singh, Sergeant Phillip Bowman and Detective Sergeant Devon Lowe.
