Some senior officials from Georgetown over the weekend visited the Food For The Poor Housing Project aback of Onderneeming, West Coast Berbice, sometimes referred to as Fort Wellington. The authorities were satisfied
with the rate at which the project was progressing.
Among the visiting team were Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, and Chief Executive Officer of Food For The Poor, Mr. Kent Vincent.
According to Mr. Vincent, funding for the projects like the Onderneeming Village project would depend on donors. In this case funding was through an American citizen, Mr. Joe Rotheli, who has funded similar projects in other parts of Guyana. And, the idea of the forty-three homes for the Onderneeming Village is in honour of Mr. Rotheli’s 43rd wedding anniversary.
The C.E.O of Food For The Poor said that beneficiaries are generally people who are on the poverty line and are not likely to be able to acquire loan from the bank. The organization is also concerned about single parent families that have small children.
In the case of the current project, the houses would have two bedrooms with internal sanitary facilities. The organization will be paying for part of the cost of the property, and each home owner would be given a year to pay their portion of the cost of the property.
Minister Bulkan, noting that it is difficult to imagine people living without electricity in this age, assured those present that Central Government will play its part, and that the residents would have access to water and electricity when the project is completed.
The authorities are working to complete the project in time for a planned handing-over on November 29.
