A lamentation on poor teaching quality in Guyana

Dear Editor,
Having spent some time reviewing the way many of our current teachers teach our children in Guyana, I can assure you that there is a desperate need for our government to scrutinise these said teachers not only on their qualifications, but also their ability to teach. There are too many teachers in their jobs with absolutely no idea of how to connect with their students. So many of these teachers are in their posts thanks to the previous government who handed out these jobs right, left and centre to family members and friends without a care in the world that these said people were unqualified and unable to teach.
Our government needs to address this very worrying situation and do so urgently. There is currently a very high rate of youngsters who drop out of school because they are not understood, their needs are not met and their talents go down the drain. Consequently, their lives become destroyed and they end up having nothing to offer themselves or their country. If this problem is not addressed, Guyana will continue in the downwards spiral it is heading in with regards to suicide rates, unemployment and high crime rates.
As it stands, our education system is being wasted by the very people who are supposed to deliver it. It is a complete shambles, an utter embarrassment to Guyana and a grave disservice to our children who are the future of our country.
The strength of any country is measured by the education services and opportunities provided for their youngsters. And so, the need to bring our children into line with modern day thinking with respect to learning and living with a positive mental attitude has never been more urgent. However, to achieve this we need teachers who can deliver on making an impact academically, professionally and positively. We need teachers who are qualified and can connect with their students because they realise the importance of their roles as mentors for our future generation and as ambassadors for our children.
Basic education is needed in Guyana for us to improve and continue to strive. This provided with qualified and competent teachers along with a government agency that can regularly monitor our schools to ensure national standards are met and kept, will all provide in aiding these very necessary changes. We as a nation are losing far too many of our qualified citizens who are opting to migrate because there are simply no career opportunities in Guyana. This would be the perfect opportunity for our government to create employment for those who qualify as competent teachers. Providing such careers to young people will prove to not only create employment to those deserving of it, but also provide a more prosperous future for Guyana through teaching our children effectively.
I also strongly believe that some very important principles ought to be adhered to whilst delivering on the curriculum. Teachers must teach with the core concept of love and unity among humanity at the forefront of delivering lessons in the classroom. We have a culture in Guyana that needs to change. We need young qualified teachers to teach our children and get rid of this race divide which is responsible for all that we suffer in Guyana. We need to destroy the race divide and conquer the great division we suffer through ignorance.
