Dear Editor,
Having read the letter about involving the elderly in national development, I agree that not only do the elderly, some of them perhaps without relatives, friends, acquaintances, or close neighbours, need a safe roof over their heads and enough to eat, but may also be in need of mental stimulation and a useful purpose in life. The letter seems so far to concentrate on ‘office work’. I think for any community to function efficiently both desk/office skills and hand skills are needed. Absolutely!
I think a progrmme of ‘mentoring’ should be considered, and both brainy, academically capable people and those with manual skills should be encouraged to become involved in passing on those capabilities to youngsters – a form of apprenticeship. It could eventually become a two-way traffic, the young teaching the elderly the skills required for the future in exchange for the elderly’s lifelong occupational skills and experience of the past. It seems worth thinking about. It has worked for me and others I know. Why let knowledge and experience of every type go to waste?
