Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space in your newspaper to let the public know about my village, Canal No2 Polder. It’s on the West Bank of the Demerara River, situated only about sixteen (16) Kilometers from Georgetown and it’s about eight (8) kilometers long. It starts a Rambarrack’s Dam and end at the Conservancy Dam.
The road was built in the late sixties by contractors named Hack and Lewis despite all those heavy duty vehicles including those tractors and trailers fully laden with sugar cane approximately ten tons about 100 per day for at least, four months twice a year. These didn’t and couldn’t damage it until now.
The road now is virtually impassable. If one has to drive that 8km piece of road it will take them at least thirty minutes. You can’t drive more than 20km per hour. If you want to avoid those pot holes which are many, you have to do at lease 10km per hour even then it’s impossible to avoid all.
The past and present Government didn’t care to do anything in this village which was once the bread basket of Guyana and by extension the Caribbean. Since the late sixties, we had two things done in Canal No2 Polder – road and electricity by the late President Mr. Forbes Burnham. That was the end of development in this village. In this age of technology we can’t even have land line phones, thus having access to the Internet. If it rains for thirty minutes the whole village floods. We can’t even plant the lands now; can’t even have easy access to our home via the main road.
I do hope that this letter can get someone in authority’s attention so that they can at lease fix this road and give us the badly needed Internet Service for our children via the land line phones. We are mostly people of Indians decent and the previous Government didn’t see it fit to fix this road for the past 23 years. I do hope that this new Coalition Government does something for us. Please we are pleading to this Government. Thank you Sir, for publish my letter so that we the villagers of Canal No2 Polder W.B.D can get some badly needed help.
