Gunmen struck at two New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara businesses yesterday within the space of just a few hours.
The two businesses are also near each other.
The bandits first struck at a Shoppers Choice at around 10:00 hrs. Three men, one armed with a handgun, invaded the supermarket and held customers and staff at gunpoint.
They relieved the customers of cash and valuables then proceeded to empty the cash registers.
After robbing the victims, the gang locked everyone in a room at the back of the
building. A delivery truck driver who walked in when the robbery was in progress shared the same fate.
The robbers then escaped in a waiting car.
A few hours later, two gunmen robbed the customers and employees of the popular hangout spot Palm Castle just a few doors away.
According to the proprietor, the bandits put a gun to the waitress’s head and emptied the bar drawer of cash before relieving the customers, one of whom claimed he lost some $80,000.
The bandits were apparently thirsty as they rummaged through the coolers. They then sped off in a waiting car.
