Andre ‘Padlock’ Green has continued his winning ways in the cycling arena in Berbice when he outsprinted Andrew Hicks in a close finish to take the top spot in a 30-mile race held on the Corentyne Highway on Sunday last.
The race which was organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) in collaboration with overseas based Guyanese Franco Crawford pedaled off at the No. 51 Police Station and ended at Main and Alexander Streets, New Amsterdam; 11 cyclists completed the event.
It was Green’s third consecutive win since returning to competitive racing following an accident. Crawford, who is still a member of FACC rolled back the years by being a competitor in the event and was third to cross the line. Fourth was Brian Harris followed by Syborne Fernandez and Curtis Dey.
Green won four of the 10 sprint prizes with Hicks taking three, Ralph Seenarine two and Rokeel Gorden, the other. Shivnarine Bhowandin was the only BMX competitor. The winner and other top performers were presented with cash incentives and spare parts while all the riders who finished the race received a complete cycling outfit.
Crawford, a former leading cyclist in his heyday, now resides in the UK where he continues to compete on the European and North American circuits. He has been returning home on a regular basis where he assists his countrymen so that they can have an opportunity to improve their skills and better themselves in whatever they do.
He is motivated to assist because he feels happy to be able to give back to his home country and community. He remembered his early upbringing when he hadn’t a proper bike and gear to participate. Crawford does not only assist cycling, but gives to other sports and community activities as well. The event was coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts. (Samuel Whyte)
