Woman, 64, bites armed cops trying to arrest wanted grandson

A 64-year-old woman is now in custody after biting an armed policeman and a member of a community policing group who were trying to arrest her grandson.
The ranks were bitten on their thumbs by the irate grandmother, whose husband, also aged 64, also assaulted the hapless lawmen; identified as Police Constable Moriah and Neighbourhood Policeman Stanley.
The grandson, who is wanted for a series of offences, also grabbed and discharged Constable Moriah’s firearm before fleeing.
The bizarre showdown between the elderly couple, their 19-year-old grandson, Danesh Persaud, and the lawmen, occurred at around
10.00 hrs yesterday at Number One Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice.
Prior to the bungled arrest, the two ranks were returning to the Blairmont Police Station with two men they had detained for break and enter and larceny at Number Four Settlement, Blairmont West Bank Berbice.
It was while they were taking the suspects back to the station in a car that they spotted Danesh Persaud standing outside in front of his grandparents’ yard.
Constable Moriah, who was armed with a .38 revolver and six live rounds, and the community policemen, then tried to take Persaud into custody.
But during a scuffle, the elderly couple managed to pull away their grandson from the arresting officers. It was then that the grandmother bit the officers on their thumbs.
When Constable Moriah attempted to re-arrest the Persaud, the teen held the policeman’s firearm, causing six rounds to be discharged.
Fortunately, no one was shot.
Both policemen were treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital and discharged.
The grandparents were taken into custody and will be charged soon.
