Three ex-participants receive donation for English trip
Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd, pacer Qumar Torrington and Sachin
Singh leaves today to represent a West Indies under-16 team to tour England for a series of limited overs matches where they will face several English youth teams.
The trio off DCC players, are all national youth players and came through the Garvin Nedd’s DCC Cricket Academy held annually over the school vacation holiday. Yesterday, on the opening day of this year’s programme they were presented with spending money for the 10-day tour by the Chase Academic Foundation.
The monetary donation was presented by the son of the Headmaster of Chase Academy, Orande Chase, who is one of the 70 young cricketers registered for this year’s DCC School Holiday camp.
Nedd, who participated in his last practice session yesterday, said he worked hard and was happy to be rewarded by being one of those selected to travel to England.
President of DCC, former national under-19 opening batsman Alfred Mentore was unavoidable absent yesterday due to a City Councilors meeting and Club member Ian John spoke on his behalf.
John informed the gathering that the three players were products of the DCC Vacation Programme and urged the youngsters to take their time at the camp seriously since it was not just about swinging their bats or bowling balls.
“This camp should teach you about team work, discipline and other life skills which should do you well in your later life,” John added.
He also informed the three West Indies selectees that they must be prepared for the cold weather, strange food and different conditions in England which should make them become more matured and experienced when return to Guyana.
Chase Academy was moved to make their contribution because Garvin Nedd, a former Guyana off-spinner, is the cricket coach at the educational institution where his son Ashmead is the school’s Captain and also plays in the football team.
Chase Academy in an effort to produce well rounded students, place as much emphasis on Sports as on Academics and are the National Digicel School’s football champions and also the winners of the school’s cricket tournament.
