A 26-year- old labourer from Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was on Friday remanded for the murder of John Knights.
Knight was murdered on August 1 at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara. The murder is said to have occurred during the Emancipation Day activities in the community.
The suspected murderer, Orell Cooke appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Cooke’s Attorney, Mark Conway told the court that his client was in a common-law relationship and works as a labourer to support his family.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte told the court that the police are still conducting investigations into the matter. The matter was adjourned to August, 30 for reports.
Meanwhile, an Austin Street, Campbellville man was slapped with charges relating to the theft of several million dollars worth of raw gold and drums of diesel.
According to the charge Romel Sahadeo 28, of 10 Austin Street, Campbellville, stole $5,700,050 worth of raw gold and 80 drums of diesel, worth $4,000,000.
The items valued in total $9,700,500. According to the charge the incident occurred between May 29 and June 4 while Sahadeo was employed by Daby, as a clerk at Omai Essequibo River.
Sahadeo pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate‘s Court.
While Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick did not object to bail he asked that the bail be set on certain conditions.
Botwick requested that if bail is granted to the accused, he should be ordered to lodge his passport with the court in addition to report to an officer-in-charge at a police station at the ‘F’ Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, (CID) every week until completion of the trial.
As such, Magistrate ordered that Sahadeo be placed on $1M bail. She also ordered him to lodge his passport at the Magistrates’ Courts and report to Eve Leary every week.
The matter is set to continue on September 6.
