Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after denying separate drug trafficking charges, when they appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on July 18, at Aishalton Village, Dexter Franklin, 23, of Lot 30 Lethem had 465 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Trevor Craig, 23, of 80 First Street, Cinema Town, Linden, is accused of having 492 grams of cannabis in his possession for trafficking, also on July 18, at a Police Outpost in Essequibo.
Both men, who were represented by Attorney Moti Singh, pleaded not guilty to the allegations after they were read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Attorney Singh made bail applications on behalf of both accused, requesting for them to be granted reasonable bail.
In relation to the charge against Franklin, Singh told the court that on the day in question, his client was among several other persons travelling in a truck that was stopped and searched by police. Singh said that the alleged illicit substance was found in the tray of the vehicle and police arrested and charged his client.
He added that the driver of the truck was arrested but subsequently released.
Singh stated that Craig was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped and searched by police.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail for the defendants on the ground that no special reasons were given to satisfy the court. He said that Frank admitted to ownership of the drug which was found behind the seat in which he was sitting.
According to the prosecutor, Craig was among several passengers in a cruiser that was stopped and searched by police.
Jones added that police asked the occupants to disembark the vehicle with their belongings. Jones stated that a hammock that Craig was carrying was searched and the marijuana was found concealed inside.
Craig, Jones said, admitted that he owned the drug, and that he was “going on a hustle”.
The Chief Magistrate remanded both men to prison. Franklin will make his next court appearance on September 1 at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court. Craig’s matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
